New Year wishes not only mark the excitement for 2024 but also offer a moment to say goodbye to 2023 in a meaningful way. Whether you're toasting with champagne or jotting down new resolutions, this transitional time is perfect for reflecting on the year just past and making plans for the future. It holds a special magic, with a promise of new opportunities and the possibility to change our lives for the better. It's also a great time to bond over old memories as you endeavor to make more.  On behalf of the Board and staff, Happy New Year!  May the coming year be full of grand adventures, memories and opportunities.

New 5G cell tower proposal public hearing

As we discussed over the last few months, the District has been approached by AT&T with a proposal to build a new 5G cell tower at our Highlands Tank site (end of Avenida Farralone, up the hill) to increase cell coverage in town.  The District’s Board of Directors has been evaluating the proposed tower design, how it may or may not impact residents and the surrounding environment, and how it may impact District operations – especially its water meters.

Again, the Board has not made a decision on whether to allow this new tower and wants to start soliciting public input on this proposal before making a decision.  We are scheduled to hold a public hearing on this topic at 9:30 am on Saturday January 20, 2024, at the Community Center.  Please join us to have the opportunity to learn more about the proposal and express your opinion either for or against it.

Recology rates are increasing 6.4% for 2024

Per the current Franchise Agreement adopted in January 2023, Recology is allowed to increase annual rates based on their actual cost of service using the Refuse Rate Index (RRI) methodology described in the Agreement.  These increases are capped at the limits specified in the Agreement and as indicated in our Prop 218 notification.  Below is a summary of their planned rate increase for 2024:

EPA requiring lead water pipe removal

th-175725228

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a proposal in December which would require water systems across the U.S. to remove and replace lead pipes within the next ten years.  The federal government  has made this move as a centerpiece of its plan to address racial disparities as well as environmental and health issues in the wake of water contamination crises in recent years in Newark, NJ and Flint, MI.

This proposed rule is anticipated to be promulgated sometime in 2024.

The District currently has no lead water transmission, distribution or service lines in our system so we will be unaffected by this new rule.
