Our mission statement is:

“Responsibly manage District resources to provide Stinson Beach with high-quality drinking water, regulation of individual onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTSs), and management of solid waste collection and disposal services at a reasonable cost now and in the future.”

There have been a lot of changes implemented by the District in the last few years, and all tie back to the District’s Board-approved Strategic Plan which is governed by our mission statement and core values.  Since public trust and transparency are absolutely critical, we both invite and encourage you to discuss any questions or concerns you may have with us.  There are a number of ways to do so:

  • Join the District’s Board of Directors at our regular publicly-held meetings on the third Saturday of every month at 9:30 am here at the District office.
  • Attend the Stinson Beach Village Association monthly public meeting. Details, agendas and minutes are available at stinsonbeachvillage.org.  At lease one member of the District’s Board of Directors is always present at these meetings and available to answer questions.
  • Drop by the District office during the General Manager’s “open office hours” every Tuesday from 2-4 pm.
  • Schedule a call or meeting with the District’s General Manager. He can be reached at knelson@stinsonwater.org or directly by phone at (415) 868-1333, ext. 100.

OWTS Monitoring Program Changes

We are taking this opportunity to revist our current onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) inspection schedule.  Historically, all systems were inspected every two years and we recently revamped the schedule so that systems are currently inspected annually.  Unfortunately, this results in systems only being inspected at certain times of the year and not at others.  As a result, we have initiated a new schedule  that pushes back inspection to every 15 months.  This will allow us to verify your system’s performance  during all four seasons over a four-year period.

As a result, the District may be inspecting your system at different times of the year than in the past.  Rest assured that we will send a notification to your USPS and email address on record at least two weeks prior to your scheduled inspection date.  Also, please note that you are welcome to be present during the inspection, but your presence isn’t necessarily required.

Prior to inspection, please have all OWTS elements accessible.  This means clearing away all ground cover, plantings and debris back to a minimum distance of 24 inches to ensure hatches, riser lids and covers are accessible and can be opened and/or removed.  This is also required for all diversion valves, purge valves, and diversion field monitoring wells.

Upon completion of inspection, the District will continue to issue a Notification of Completed Inspection or Maintenance Order(s) listing all required corrective actions, if any.

Backflow Prevention Devices

“Backflow” is a term describing the undesirable reversal of flow and possible contamination back into a public drinking water system.  A backflow prevention device is a testable and repairable in-line assembly that stops water from flowing from your house pipes into the public watermain.  These devices are essential to protect our drinking water system from contamination due to backflow.

For our system, these devices are required by State Law, and State Law requires they be tested annually.  The District keeps a database of these testing results that get reported to the California State Water Resources Control Board as part of our regulatory compliance requirements.
